Brief Description

To introduce the student to:the paradigm of multidatabase systems. Implications of distribution, autonomy, and heterogeneity on systems architectures and management techniques are presented, and some logical-level issues, and some system-level issues are discussed; the new ideas on querying to WWW, WWW being considered as a large world-wide distributed unstructured database. To give a general view on Web-like databases (WDB) with presenting some contemporary approaches, and to introduce XML as a technology for representing WDBs. To consider logical and set theoretic approaches to Web-like databases, corresponding query languages and their expressive power with reference to descriptive complexity theory. To introduce the student to the concept of a deductive database, its model theoretic and proof theoretic foundations. Important classes of deductive databases (nonrecursive, stratified and locally stratified) are presented, and a particular deductive query language, Datalog, is introduced and discussed.
